The therapeutic effect of aquariums

When a hobby becomes healthy

Many people look unfavourably on having an aquarium at home with a piece of ocean in it. Today we are talking about a more optimistic subject that you have probably already heard about: the therapeutic effect of this hobby, which has often become a passion.

We are all fully aware of what happens in our minds and bodies on a daily basis. It can be overwhelming at times. Many of us are constantly looking for a little peace and escape from reality. A place to relax, a place to unwind and meditate.

Our piece of ocean in the middle of the living room can be that escape, and it’s even recommended!

We’ve all sat for hours already, watching in wonder at this little world we’ve created. A living ecosystem that depends totally on us to take care of it.

But the effect that aquariums have on us is far more important than just marvelling at it, they heal us.

Studies have been conducted for decades on the positive effects of aquariums on our health:

  • Reduced anxiety,
  • of the blood pressure,
  • of the heart rate,
  • stress,
  • improved sense of well-being,
  • reduction of depression, etc., the list goes on and on.

An aquarium would help people with Alzheimer’s to increase their food intake or to calm the impatience of patients waiting for a consultation. That’s why you see them in some doctors’ offices, dental offices, hospitals and children’s hospitals. They give a sense of peace to those going through stress, injury, illness and recovery. It is a place to let go. Health care professionals know this “effect” on their patients and are implementing these systems in their institutions for this reason. The attraction and effect that the ocean has on our minds and well-being can be very powerful and lasting.

So, even if you are not aware of it, even if it hasn’t crossed your mind, your aquarium helps you feel good in your mind and body. The aquarium hobby has millions of hobbyists all over the world who benefit from its therapeutic effects. So enjoy yourself and go and enjoy your little ocean.
