Aiptasia anemone : the risks of its proliferation

Aiptasia is an anemone capable of injuring or damaging other living species in the same aquarium. It is highly aggressive with other corals.
It is capable of reproducing very quickly and thus colonize the entire aquarium in a very short time. This is why it is recommended to eliminate them as soon as they appear.

Often small in front of a great lighting, the so-called “glass anemones” come mainly from live rocks. Only even when they are small, they move easily and increase their chances of invading the aquarium.

Faced with this dangerous anemone for your marine animals, several solutions are available to you. There is the quick way with the injection of chemicals to eradicate them. Be careful, your aquarium must not be too small otherwise the chemicals could be deposited elsewhere and the quality of the water will be altered.
You can then use more natural techniques by simply catching them. Never with bare hands, Aiptasia can be captured in a jar that does not let the light pass through. You will have understood it, the aiptasia are species moving towards the light. With these parameters, they are able to detach themselves from the rock to cling to your container. You just have to get rid of them. Make sure that all rocks and other surfaces are cleaned and free of aiptasia cells.

Other methods are possible with lysmata wurdermanni shrimp that eat the aiptasia or injecting vinegar on the anemone cuttings.
As you have understood, you must start treating them from the first appearance to avoid any competition between species.

Be careful when you proceed with your manipulations in order not to let go of a piece that could grow very quickly. Also pay attention to the bites they administer to fish, molluscs and corals.

We have a product on the market that can help you administer a liquid precisely without causing damage to other reef residents such as corals and other anemones. By placing the product in the middle of Aiptasia’s tentacles will then absorb the liquid quickly, after which the anemone will disintegrate and dissolve.
