PLANKTOVIE / Research and Development

Planktonic culture has been gaining renewed interest over the last decade because of its diverse applications in advanced fields ranging from biofuel production to the development of new drugs and nutritional solutions.

With its expertise in planktonic culture, PLANKTOVIE wishes to engage in an ambitious R&D program to promote planktonic species in the fields of aquatic animal models nutrition and biomedical applications.

Zooplankton for aquatic animal models nutrition

We are dedicated to developing innovative products that enhance the use of zooplankton as feeds to support major research fields ranging from transgenics to drug discovery. The researchers and experts of PLANKTOVIE and Reed Mariculture are collaborating to develop new, innovative zooplankton feeds allowing us to cover zebrafish nutritional needs for all developmental stages. This involves optimizing the costs of growing numerous zooplankton species, taking into account the impact of the different fattening formulas on zebrafish health. In particular, fish survival, growth and fecundity will be taken into account.

Phytoplankton for biomedical applications

This ambitious program focus, in collaboration with the Universities of Nice and Marseille, on the development of a photobioreactor (the “soft mixer”) without blades in order to produce certain microalgae strains of particular interest for drug development. The microalgae-based biomass will be sold to public/private laboratories willing to extract whatever compounds they are focusing on. This same biomass will be very useful to PLANKTOVIE for extracting specific compounds, such as phytotoxins, that are gaining interest from the scientific community and industries.
